1 Thessalonians 5:18 says, “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
In all these scriptures, the inflection in the original language is that God has a higher perspective than we have and that as we trust in Him we can experience all these things working out for our benefit and for His glory (Romans 8:28). I know what the words on the page say but it is still hard to accept difficult things in our lives and trust him completely. In the words of my grandfather, “Hard work ain’t easy.”
In retrospect in some of my most difficult times of trust, I now see His hand. Boni and I would not have adopted six wonderful children if we had not struggled with infertility for 17 years. Now I can thank Him for the circumstances because I see what His plan was. Back then I couldn’t see it and was not walking in thanksgiving.
Sometimes we do what the Word says because it is easy and times are good. But may God continue to give us the grace to give thanks when times seem bad because we know in the bigger picture, He is working thing out for our good as we continue to love Him. Trust Him by thanking Him for everything. He is indeed is at work on our behalf even when we don’t see how.
